Encaustic paintings are created by melting beeswax, damar resin (from trees!) and pigment together, and painted with a layering process. Each layer is fused with heat. Encaustic can be built up, carved, and scraped down to reveal layers underneath. Other media such as paper can also be added for a fun mixed-media piece. Encaustic is an ancient medium and has been used for thousands of years. Some of the oldest paintings date back to the 1st century BC! It has made a resurgence in popularity over the last 40 years.

CLASS LOCATION:

Fern and Skye; 46 S. Broadway, Denver, CO 80203

About the Instructor:

Sarah has been working with encaustic exclusively for over 9 years. She fell in love with the medium after taking intensive workshops in both Chicago and Denver. Sarah’s favorite part about working with encaustic is creating pieces with texture you just want to touch! Sarah is represented by two galleries in Denver and has work in private collections around the country.
